White Patches On Skin Are Usually Caused By Vitiligo

-->

White patches on skin generally indicate that a person is suffering from a dermatological condition known as vitiligo. Vitiligo is a process where the skin undergoes depigmentation because the cells that are responsible for the skin pigment die or start to function abnormally. It is theorized that vitiligo is some sort of autoimmune disorder but there is no definitive knowledge as to the cause of this condition.

The white patches on skin of vitiligo, although not medically dangerous, can cause serious psychological distress if they cover parts of the body such as the face or hands where they cannot be hidden from public view. The white patches on skin are more noticeable for dark skinned individuals than for fair skinned people.

When white patches on skin begin to spread to various body parts uncontrollably, there can be a sense of panic and fear to someone who is experiencing this disorder. When vitiligo is extreme it can be a very disfiguring cosmetic condition that is somewhat akin to what burn victims face. Although vitiligo does not cause scarring of the skin, the starkness of the white patches on skin relative to the normal skin color can be startling.

As someone who has suffered only mildly from vitiligo since age 16, I can attest to some of the fears that a person with this condition undergoes. Fortunately in my case, some of the white patches on my skin disappeared naturally as I got older. I still have some mild white patches of skin but they are on areas of my body that are not viewed publicly so I have not really suffered terribly from vitiligo. I never even sought medical attention because my case was so minor.

On the other hand, my mother suffered from white patches on skin because of vitiligo for most of her life. She tried many different types of treatments, none of which really helped her in the long run. Her vitiligo was much more extensive than mine and several years ago she tried a new product called Anti-Vitiligo, which had a significant effect in decreasing the white patches on skin affected by vitiligo. Her response to the treatment has been very similar to the before and after pictures that you see to the right of this article.
