Vitiligo is a dermatologic condition that causes depigmentation or white patches to appear on the skin. This condition occurs when the cells that are responsible for pigment in the skin, melanocytes, die or function abnormally. This medical condition is not fully understood but is believed that there are between 1% and 2% of the population worldwide that suffer from vitiligo.
Many people ask what is vitiligo and what are its causes? There is some degree of evidence that suggests vitiligo occurs because of genetic, environmental and autoimmune conditions. Often vitiligo runs in families, which suggests a strong genetic component to the skin condition. There have been some studies done on families where this condition exists and genetic testing has shown abnormalities in specific chromosomes that deal with skin autoimmunity.
What is vitiligo is a question I asked myself at the age of 16 when I began to show symptoms of the skin condition myself. I first noticed some white patches of skin under my chin and above one of my eyes but these patches of white skin eventually went away on their own. I still have some vitiligo on certain parts of my body but my condition is very mild and has not really affected my life in a negative way. My mother has a more serious form of vitiligo where her hands, arms and legs are affected.
Because I have had only a few spots on my body that are really not seen publicly, vitiligo has not been that serious of a condition for me. However, for those of you who have a much more serious form of vitiligo, my heart goes out to you. I can understand the psychological devastation that this condition can have when it affects large parts of your body. Vitiligo is more obvious and difficult to hide particularly in those of you who are dark skinned.
