Vitiligo is a skin condition where white spots or white patches of skin appear on an individual’s body. This depigmentation, if widespread, can cause great psychological distress because of the marked contrast with the normal pigmented skin. There is no cure for vitiligo, but there are various types of treatment for vitiligo that have been used with varying degrees of success.
One standard treatment for vitiligo that is used by dermatologists is a cream that contains a corticosteroid. Another treatment for vitiligo is the use of Psoralen, “PUVA”, along with ultraviolet light treatment. With this particular method a Psoralen pill is taken approximately 1-2 hours before exposure to the ultraviolet light.
One newer treatment for vitiligo involves a very strong ultraviolet light wavelength in the range of 311-313 nanometers. With this strategy the light is strong enough so “PUVA” is not needed. Another method for treating vitiligo is the use of immunosuppressant creams such as Protopic and Elidel in combination with ultraviolet light. These two medications are extremely powerful and there have been reports of serious side effects with their usage.
In 2004, doctors attempted to treat vitiligo with a surgical procedure that transplanted healthy skin cells to areas of the body that were affected by vitiligo. The healthy skin cells were taken from the patient’s gluteal region and then grafted onto the affected area after it had been ablated with a medical laser. After a couple weeks, the affected area was exposed to ultraviolet light for approximately 2 months. There was a very positive outcome for 70- 80% of the patients involved in the study.
Also in 2008, a treatment for vitiligo that involved piperine, a substance that is derived from black pepper, was found to be helpful in skin repigmentation. Scientists at King’s College made this discovery in London. In addition to the piperine, ultraviolet light therapy was also used with better results.
