Skin pigment loss is the hallmark of a dermatological medical condition known as vitiligo. The pigment loss is in the form of white spots or white patches of skin that are in stark contrast to the normal color of an individual’s skin tone. The skin pigment loss of a dark skinned individual is much more noticeable than the skin pigment loss of a fair skinned individual.
Vitiligo is estimated to occur to 1%-2% of the population worldwide. It is reported in all ethnicities and in every country in the world. It is believed that the skin pigment loss that occurs with vitiligo is due to the death of the cells that are responsible for skin pigmentation or aberrant dysfunction of those cells. It is also believed that vitiligo may have something to do with an autoimmune disorder where one’s own immune system kills healthy skin pigment cells.
In vitiligo cases where there is widespread skin pigment loss there can be a devastating psychological effect on a person’s mental health. In severe cases, vitiligo can cause shocking disfigurement due to the stark contrast of the albino like skin lesions relative to one’s normal skin tone. In certain parts of the world people with dramatic skin pigment loss from vitiligo can be shunned and stigmatized.
I personally have dealt with minor skin pigment loss from vitiligo. When I was 16 I began to notice some white patches of skin under my chin and on other parts of my body. Fortunately, as I got older most of the facial pigment loss when away without any medical treatment. I was lucky in that I did not have widespread pigment loss that led to severe psychological distress.
Vitiligo tends to run in families and my mother was more severely afflicted than I. She had skin pigment loss on her hands, arms and her legs. Over the years she tried many different types of treatments involving prescription medication in conjunction with ultraviolet light therapy but there was not much change in her condition. Several years ago she tried a new natural product called Anti-Vitiligo, which proved to be remarkably successful at re-pigmenting the areas of pigment loss.
